QR Code Guide

Static or dynamic QR codes – which one fits your project?

Both QR types take people to the right destination. The key difference is whether the final content is encoded directly or can be changed later in a dashboard.

In short

Use static QR codes for fixed content and Smart QR for editable destinations, scan analytics, and routing rules.

One QR code. Two different models.

Static QR code

Stores the URL, WiFi details, or contact data directly. The encoded content remains unchanged after printing.

Smart QR

Editable destination

Stores a Fair-QR short link. You can replace the destination behind it from your dashboard.

How both types work

The encoded content makes the difference

You do not need every possible feature. The real question is whether your destination should be able to change after printing.

01

Static QR codes

The complete payload is written into the QR code locally in your browser. The QR code itself cannot be changed later. If it points to a URL, the content on that website can still be updated independently.

  • Create it for free without an account in the offline generator.
  • No redirect through Fair-QR is required.
  • Ideal for fixed URLs, WiFi access, and contact details.

02

Smart QR codes

The QR code contains a managed Fair-QR short link. You change the destination behind that link in your dashboard while the printed QR code remains the same.

  • Change destinations after printing without reprinting.
  • Analyze scans by time, device, and region.
  • Use routing rules to serve the right audience.

Decide by use case

Which QR code fits your project?

Concrete examples are often more useful than long feature lists. These recommendations cover the most common situations.

Important before you decide

Created offline does not always mean used offline

A static URL QR code is created locally. People still need an internet connection to open the linked website.

The printed Smart QR stays the same

With Smart QR, you only change the destination behind the short link. The printed QR pattern does not need to be replaced.

A static QR code cannot be converted

To switch to Smart QR, create a new QR code and replace any copies that have already been printed.
